The series will open with The Bank Job, a 2008 British crime film directed by Roger Donaldson. The film was based on an actual bank robbery in central London, from which the money and valuables stolen were never recovered. The truth about the robbery was never told at the time, allegedly to protect a prominent member of the British royal family. Although fictionalized, the producers of his film claim to be telling the whole story for the first time.

In the second film in the series, The Grocer’s Son (Le Fils de l’épicier, 2007), Antoine is forced to return home from Paris to a small mountain village to help out with the family business when his father suffers a stroke. Directed by Eric Guirado, this surprise French box-office hit is ultimately about the coming of age of a young man discovering life and love in the countryside.

Third up is Mostly Martha (Bella Martha), a 2001 German romance comedy directed by Sandra Nettelbeck. Martha is an uptight chef whose obsession with cooking extends to discussing recipes with her therapist and abusing anyone at the restaurant who tries to send food back. Martha’s world is turned upside-down when she gets saddled with her newly orphaned niece.

Eliska is a medical student on the brink of arrest for her participation in a resistance movement when she is given new identity papers and sent to the countryside. There, she marries Joza, a sawmill worker whose life she has saved. Together, they face difficulties from the German occupation and, later, the brutal Red Army “liberators.”
